Kaunaoa Beach

Kaunaoa Beach
Kaunaoa Beach is One of America’s Best. Located next to the Mauna Kea Resort on the Big Island of Hawaii, the crescent shaped Kaunaoa Beach is a little slice of heaven. The beach is one of the best on the island, and is consistently chosen as one of the best beaches in the United States. It’s never too crowded and the water is always perfect.

The beach has a natural rock reef, which helps to provide a bit of protection from the surf. It makes the waves perfect for body boarding and boogie boarding. Because the beach is so close to the resort, it is well maintained. Hotel staff makes sure the beach is clear of debris and they make sure the bathrooms are clean and in good working order.

When heading out to the beach, you should keep in mind that parking in the area is limited. You should try to get to the beach as early as possible to ensure that you have good parking.

The most popular activities on the beach are swimming and body boarding; however, you can also find some nice, calm areas where you can snorkel. The left side of the beach has some rocks a short ways out into the ocean that make for a great snorkeling area.

If you want to have some fun on the sand, there is also a volleyball court, where you and some friends (or some people you’ve just met) can engage in a friendly game. After a rousing game of beach volleyball, you can slip into the water and cool off.

Of course, many people just choose to sit on the beach and soak up some of the warm Hawaiian sunshine while letting your cares drift away. This beach is perfect for that as well!

In the evenings, you might even be lucky enough to see some of the rays said to frequent the waters just off the beach.

Kaunaoa Beach has bathrooms and showers, but there are no lifeguards on duty. This means you should watch the conditions of the ocean very carefully and don’t enter unless the water looks relatively safe.

It’s easy to get to the beach. You simply take Highway 19 north out of Kona, and then take a left at Mile Marker 68. Follow the road to find parking and access to the beach. Alternatively, you could stay at the resort at the north end of the beach and then just step out of your hotel room and be on the beach within seconds!
