Hawaiian Tourism

With an average daytime temperature of 85 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer and 75 degrees in the winter, the Hawaiian islands are a year-round getaway destination. Six of the archipelago's major islands -- Oahu, Maui, Lanai, Kauai, Molokai and Big Island -- are open to visitors. Although all are known for their abundance of natural attractions, each island offers a different experience.
Oahu has the largest population and is home to the state capital, Honolulu, and the most prominent neighborhood in the state, Waikiki, which is known for its nightlife. If you seek serenity and seclusion, Lanai is the island for you. Many visitors believe Maui, the second largest island, has the best beaches. Big Island is larger than all the others combined. Its 13 climactic zones, waterfalls and volcanic activity make it an ideal destination for ecotourism. Kauai, the oldest and northernmost island, also has impressive natural attractions. Almost half of the residents of Molokai are of native Hawaiian descent, which makes it the island most in touch with its storied past.

Hawaii's beaches are its claim to fame. One of the best known is Waikiki Beach on Oahu. On Molokai, you'll find Papohaku Beach Park, one of the state's largest white sand beaches. Another prominent white sand spot is Maui's 3-mile-long Kaanapali Beach. Black sand is the draw at Punaluu Beach Park on Big Island. For couples in search of romance, Lanai boasts a number of secluded beaches, including Polihua. Hanalei Beach Park on Kauai is also an ideal location for taking in a romantic sunset. There are a number of family-friendly beaches in Hawaii as well, including Lydgate Beach Park on Kauai and Spencer Beach Park on Big Island.

Aquatic Activities

Hawaii's coastal areas offer many opportunities for water-based recreation. Waikiki Beach's conditions are optimal for surfers to ride waves and polish their skills with the help of a local expert. Kahaluu Beach Park on Big Island and Oahu's Kailua Beach and Marine Life Conservation District are excellent locations for snorkeling. Maui is a prime whale-watching destination, and able swimmers can dive with manta rays at night off the Big Island's Kona coast. The rays are harmless creatures that flock to the area after dark to feed on plankton illuminated by spotlights installed on the ocean floor.

Natural Attractions

Kauai is home to the 3,500-foot-deep Waimea Canyon, known as the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific." On this island, visitors also can see the awe-inspiring cliffs of Napali on the North Shore. Haleakala, the highest peak on Maui, is a popular sunrise-watching spot. A prominent tourist attraction on Big Island is Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, designated a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The park encompasses one of the most active volcanoes in the world.

Historic Landmarks

Oahu has several historic attractions, including Pearl Harbor. This National Historic Landmark encompasses five sites that honor the victims of the Japanese attack in 1941 that thrust the United States into World War II. Also on Oahu is Iolani Palace, built in 1882 for the Hawaiian royal family. Hulihee Palace, the monarchy's summer home, is on Big Island. On Maui you can visit the town of Lahaina, formerly capitol of the Hawaiian kingdom, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Visitors to Hawaii have hundreds of lodging options, including all-inclusive luxury resorts and hotels just steps from the shore. For those visiting Oahu on a budget, the Waikiki Beachside Hostel is less than a block from the beach. Bed and breakfasts provide a more personalized service. Large groups should consider rental condominiums and other furnished vacation rentals, available on all six islands.
